On June 7, 2025, families in Niger State, Nigeria, observed Sallah (Eid al-Adha) amidst the aftermath of devastating floods that struck the town of Mokwa in late May. The floods, caused by heavy rainfall and the collapse of a nearby dam, resulted in over 200 fatalities, injured at least 121 individuals, and left more than 1,000 people missing. Approximately 3,000 homes were destroyed, displacing thousands and causing significant damage to infrastructure, including roads and bridges.

Despite the tragedy, the community came together to support one another during the Sallah celebrations. Local and national efforts provided relief to the affected families. The Niger State Government distributed relief materials worth ₦25 million, including food items like rice, corn, and millet, and provided temporary shelters for displaced persons . Additionally, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross, donated ₦39 million to assist 1,250 flood victims in the region .

Community leaders and organizations also played a role in supporting the vulnerable. For instance, former Niger State commissioner Jonathan Vatsa distributed cash to the elderly and vulnerable in his community during the Sallah period, highlighting the economic hardships faced by many Nigerians .

The Sallah celebrations in Niger State were marked by a blend of mourning and resilience, as families honored the memory of lost loved ones while finding solace in communal support and the spirit of the festival.
