Early Life & Education
Joash Ojo Amupitan was born on April 25, 1967, in Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria. He began his tertiary education at Kwara State Polytechnic in Ilorin, where he obtained a National Diploma in 1984. He then enrolled at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), earning his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) in 1987, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988. He later completed his Master of Laws (LL.M) in 1993 and his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law in 2007, both at UNIJOS.
Academic & Legal Career
After his youth service, Amupitan joined the University of Jos in 1989 as an assistant lecturer. He rose through the academic ranks, becoming a professor of law in 2008. His areas of specialization include company law, law of evidence, corporate governance, and privatization law. He was conferred the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2014. His academic leadership roles have included Head of Department (Public Law), Dean of the Faculty of Law, Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at UNIJOS. He also serves as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University in Osun State.
Public Appointment
In October 2025, Amupitan was nominated and subsequently confirmed as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Nigeria’s electoral regulatory body. He was sworn into office later that month and pledged to bring integrity, legal expertise, and reform-oriented leadership to the commission’s work ahead of major upcoming elections.

Amupitan has authored multiple legal texts, including works on corporate governance, evidence law, company law, and trust law. He has supervised numerous postgraduate students and contributed to legal reform discourse in Nigeria, particularly in the areas of privatization, governance, and electoral law.
Personal Life
He is married to Dr. (Mrs.) Yemisi Amupitan, and the couple has four children. Throughout his life he has been noted for discipline, scholarship, and a dedication to legal education and public service.
