Early Life and Education
Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede was born in 1968 in Ikere, Ekiti State, Nigeria. He joined the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in 1987 as a member of the 39th Regular Course and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1992 after completing his military training.
Military Career
General Oluyede’s military career spans over three decades, covering both command and administrative roles across different parts of Nigeria and international missions.
He served as Platoon Commander and Adjutant at the 65 Battalion, Company Commander at the 177 Guards Battalion, and Staff Officer at the Guards Brigade. He later became Commandant of the Amphibious Training School and Commander of the 27 Task Force Brigade in the North-East under Operation HADIN KAI.
Throughout his service, Oluyede participated in peacekeeping operations such as the ECOMOG Mission in Liberia and Operation Harmony IV in the Bakassi Peninsula. His leadership and professionalism earned him several recognitions and promotions, rising to the rank of Major General in 2020.
Senior Leadership and Appointments
On October 30, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Oluyede as Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS). He was later confirmed by the National Assembly and officially assumed the position in December 2024.
In October 2025, he was promoted to Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) — the highest military position in Nigeria. His leadership focuses on discipline, strategic reform, inter-service collaboration, and personnel welfare.
