Senator Natasha Rath Marcus is an American attorney and Democratic politician who served in the North Carolina State Senate from 2019 to 2025. She represented the 41st Senate District, which includes parts of Mecklenburg County
Early Life and Education
Born on April 27, 1969, in Brockport, New York, Marcus pursued higher education at Hamilton College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy in 1991. She then obtained her Juris Doctor from Duke University School of Law in 1994. Following her graduation, Marcus practiced civil litigation at the law firm Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard and served as a judicial clerk for a federal judge in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Political Career
Marcus began her political journey with an unsuccessful bid for the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2014. She gained prominence in 2018 by defeating Republican incumbent Jeff Tarte to win a seat in the North Carolina Senate. During her tenure, Marcus was known for advocating for individual freedoms, environmental protections, healthcare accessibility, and voting rights. She served on several Senate committees, including Commerce and Insurance, Judiciary, Redistricting & Elections, Budget, and Education.
In 2023, Marcus announced her candidacy for North Carolina Commissioner of Insurance in the 2024 election and secured the Democratic nomination.
Personal Life
Marcus resides in Davidson, North Carolina, and is the mother of two adult daughters. Her professional background includes work with a nonprofit community service center prior to her tenure in the Senate.
