Onyeka Onwenu (January 31, 1952 – July 30, 2024) was a multifaceted Nigerian icon renowned for her contributions to music, film, journalism, activism, and politics. Affectionately dubbed the “Elegant Stallion,” she left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s cultural and political landscape.
Early Life & Education
Born in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onwenu pursued higher education in the United States. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College and later obtained a Master’s degree in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research in New York. Before returning to Nigeria in 1980, she worked as a tour guide at the United Nations. Upon her return, she completed her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Lagos.
Broadcasting & Journalism
Onwenu began her career as a newsreader and reporter with the NTA. In 1984, she gained international acclaim for her documentary Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches, which critically examined corruption and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta. This work solidified her reputation as a fearless journalist committed to social justice.
Music Career
Transitioning into music in the early 1980s, Onwenu’s debut album Endless Life showcased her unique blend of pop and Afrobeat. She collaborated with Juju music legend King Sunny Ade on the hit song “Wait for Me,” promoting family planning and responsible parenthood. In the 1990s, she shifted towards gospel music, using her platform to address issues like women’s rights, health, and peace.
Acting Career
Onwenu’s acting prowess was evident in numerous Nollywood films. She starred in Rising Moon (2005), earning the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Her other notable films include Half of a Yellow Sun (2013), Lionheart (2018), God Calling (2018), and Obara’M (2022).
Political & Public Service
A member of the People’s Democratic Party, Onwenu twice contested for the chairmanship of Ideato North Local Government Area in Imo State. Though unsuccessful, she was appointed Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture. In 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed her as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development, a position she held until her passing in 2024.
Activism & Advocacy
Onwenu was a staunch advocate for artists’ rights. In 2000, she protested against the NTA for using her song “Iyogogo” without permission, leading a hunger strike that garnered widespread support and highlighted the need for proper compensation for artists.
Personal Life
Onwenu maintained a private personal life. She was married to a Yoruba Muslim, and they had two sons, Tijani Charles and Abraham. She often refrained from discussing her family in public, focusing instead on her professional endeavors.
Death & Legacy
On July 30, 2024, Onwenu collapsed after performing at a friend’s birthday party in Lagos and was pronounced dead at Reddington Hospital. She was 72. Her death prompted an outpouring of tributes, with President Bola Tinubu describing her as a “versatile and extremely gifted artiste” whose legacy would endure through her contributions to Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
