Wing Commander Vyomika Singh is a distinguished officer in the Indian Air Force (IAF), renowned for her exemplary service as a helicopter pilot and her role in significant military operations.

Early Life and Education

Vyomika Singh’s aspiration to fly was ignited during her school years. An incident in sixth grade, where a teacher highlighted the meaning of her name—”daughter of the sky”—inspired her to pursue a career in aviation. She actively participated in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) during her academic years, which further fueled her passion for the armed forces. She earned an engineering degree, becoming the first in her family to join the military.

Military Career

Commissioning and Service: Vyomika was commissioned into the IAF’s Flying Branch on December 18, 2004, as a helicopter pilot. She has accumulated over 2,500 flying hours on aircraft such as the Chetak and Cheetah, operating in challenging terrains including Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast.
Permanent Commission: On December 18, 2019, she received a permanent commission in the Flying Branch, allowing her to continue serving in a long-term capacity.
Rescue Operations: In November 2020, she led a critical high-altitude rescue mission in Arunachal Pradesh, showcasing her skill and dedication.
Mountaineering Expedition: In 2021, Vyomika participated in a tri-services all-women mountaineering expedition to Mount Manirang (21,625 feet) in Himachal Pradesh, as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.

Operation Sindoor

On May 7, 2025, Wing Commander Singh co-led a media briefing alongside Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, detailing Operation Sindoor. This operation was a precision strike targeting nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), conducted in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, which claimed 26 lives. The operation employed advanced weaponry to minimize civilian casualties, and all targeted camps were confirmed destroyed.

Personal Life

Vyomika Singh hails from a middle-class civilian family with no prior military background. Her father was a botany teacher, and her mother was also an educator. She has two sisters: Bhumika Singh, a scientist based in the UK, and Nirmalika Singh. Vyomika is married to a fellow officer in the Indian Air Force.
