Onyeka Onwenu (31 January 1952 – 30 July 2024) was a Nigerian singer-songwriter, actress, journalist, activist, and politician, affectionately known as the “Elegant Stallion” for her multifaceted contributions to Nigerian arts and culture.
Early Life and Education
Born in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onwenu was the youngest daughter of D.K. Onwenu, an educationist and politician who passed away in a car accident when she was four. She was raised in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Onwenu pursued higher education in the United States, earning a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College and a Master’s in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research in New York.
Music Career
Onwenu began her music career in 1981 with the pop album For the Love of You. She gained widespread acclaim with her 1986 album One Love, which featured socially conscious themes. In the late 1980s, she collaborated with juju legend King Sunny Ade on the hit song “Wait For Me,” promoting family planning. Transitioning to gospel music in the 1990s, Onwenu’s work often addressed issues like women’s rights and social justice.
Acting and Broadcasting
Onwenu’s broadcasting career included work as a newsreader and reporter for the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). In 1984, she wrote and presented the acclaimed documentary Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches, highlighting corruption and environmental issues in the Niger Delta. Her acting career featured roles in films such as Nightmare, Rising Moon, Widow’s Cot, Half of a Yellow Sun, and Lionheart. She won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2006.
Public Service and Activism
A dedicated activist, Onwenu was appointed Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and, in 2013, became the Executive Director of the National Centre for Women Development under President Goodluck Jonathan. She was known for her advocacy on women’s rights and social issues, including a notable hunger strike in 2000 protesting unpaid royalties by NTA.
Personal Life
Onwenu was private about her personal life but confirmed she was married to a Yoruba Muslim and had two sons, Tijani Charles and Abraham.
Death and Legacy
Onyeka Onwenu passed away on 30 July 2024 in Lagos at the age of 72. Her death was widely mourned, with tributes highlighting her versatility and impact on Nigerian culture. President Bola Tinubu described her as a “versatile and extremely gifted artiste” who brought joy to many.
