Early Life and Education
Dallin Harris Oaks was born on August 12, 1932, in Provo, Utah. He was named after his ancestor, Dallin Harris, a pioneer and artist. His father, Dr. Lloyd E. Oaks, died when Dallin was only seven years old, leaving his mother, Stella Harris Oaks, to raise him and his siblings during difficult times.
Oaks attended Brigham Young University (BYU), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1954. He then went on to the University of Chicago Law School, graduating with honors in 1957.
Legal and Academic Career
After completing his education, Oaks worked as a law clerk for Chief Justice Earl Warren of the U.S. Supreme Court — one of the most prestigious legal positions in the country.
He later became a professor of law at the University of Chicago, where he earned a reputation as a brilliant legal scholar. Oaks also served as the executive director of the American Bar Foundation and wrote numerous legal articles and books.
In 1971, he returned to Utah to serve as president of Brigham Young University (BYU), a position he held until 1980. During his leadership, the university saw significant growth in both academic programs and student enrollment.
Judicial Service
In 1980, Dallin H. Oaks was appointed by Utah’s governor to serve as a Justice of the Utah Supreme Court. He held this position for five years, earning respect for his fairness, intellect, and moral integrity.
Religious Leadership
In 1984, Oaks resigned from the Supreme Court after being called as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Dallin H. Oaks married June Dixon in 1952, and they had six children together. After her passing in 1998, he married Kristen M. McMain in 2000.
