Rear Admiral Idi Abbas
Early Life & Background
Idi Abbas was born on September 20, 1969, in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Nigeria. He began his education at Gwagwarwa Primary School in Kano, before attending the Air Force Military School in Jos from 1981 to 1986. In September 1987, he secured admission to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as part of the 40th Regular Course. He graduated and was commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant on September 10, 1993, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry.
Military Training & Specialisation
Abbas is an Above Water Warfare (AWW) specialist. His course credentials include the Sub-Lieutenant Technical Course at NNS Quorra in 1994; the Junior and Senior Staff Courses at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji in 2001 and 2005 respectively; the Officers’ Long Course (OLC XII) at NNS Quorra (2003) specialising in AWW; the United Nations Military Observer Course in Tanzania (2009); and graduation from the National Defence College (NDC) Abuja as member of Course 23 in 2014.
Career & Appointments
Abbas served aboard several Nigerian Navy ships including NNS Aradu, NNS Damisa, and NNS Ayam as a watch-keeping officer. He subsequently held roles such as Naval Assistant to the Deputy Commandant of AFCSC Jaji (1998), Staff Officer III – Marine Services at Naval Headquarters (2004), Gunnery Officer on NNS Ohue (2006), Instructor at NNS Quorra (2007), and Commanding Officer of the Burma Battalion at NDA (2008).
Between 2010 and 2012 he was Base Administrative Officer of NNS Pathfinder and Naval Contingent Commander for Joint Task Force Operation Safe Haven. Later he served as Maritime Guard Commander of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in 2015, and Commander Task Group of Operation Tsare-Teku in 2017. He rose through the ranks in the Central Naval Command, culminating as Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Central Naval Command. In July 2023 he became Chief of Naval Safety & Standard (CNASS) and in February 2024, Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations (CDCMR) at Defence Headquarters. In January 2025 he served as Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Heritage Centre before his appointment as the 25th Chief of Naval Staff on October 24, 2025.

Idi Abbas holds the designations “psc” (Passed Staff Course) and “fdc” (Fellow Defence College). His awards include the Forces Service Star (FSS), Meritorious Service Star (MSS), Distinguished Service Star (DSS), Grand Service Star (GSS), and Defence General Staff Medal (DGSM).
Personal Life & Interests
Rear Admiral Abbas is a practising Muslim. He is married to Mrs Aisha Abbas, and they have two sons. Among his interests are playing hockey and driving.

As Chief of Naval Staff, Abbas is positioned to lead the Nigerian Navy through a critical phase of maritime security, particularly in combating crude oil theft, illegal refining, piracy, and advancing the country’s “Blue Economy” drive.
