Early Life and Education
Asrani, whose full name is Govardhan Asrani, was born on January 1, 1941, in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. He was raised in a Sindhi Hindu family; his father owned a carpet shop in Jaipur after moving there during the partition.
Asrani attended St. Xavier’s School in Jaipur and later graduated from Rajasthan College. While studying, he also worked as a voice artist for All India Radio. His deep passion for acting led him to join the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune in 1964, where he completed his training in 1966.
Career
Asrani began his acting career in 1967 with a Gujarati film before moving on to Hindi cinema. His natural comic timing and expressive performances quickly made him one of India’s most popular comedians.
He rose to fame during the 1970s and 1980s, appearing in several successful films as a comedian, supporting actor, and sometimes as the lead. One of his most iconic roles was as the Jailer in the film Sholay, which remains a classic in Indian cinema.
Asrani also collaborated frequently with superstar Rajesh Khanna, appearing in more than 25 films together between 1972 and 1991. Over his career, he acted in more than 300 Hindi and Gujarati films, showcasing his versatility in both comedy and serious roles.
He also directed a few films and appeared in several Gujarati movies as the main lead. His dedication and consistent performances made him a respected figure in the Indian film industry.
