Rubio began his political career in 2000 when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. He served until 2008, including a term as Speaker from 2006 to 2008.

In 2010, Rubio was elected to the U.S. Senate representing Florida. He was re-elected in 2016 and 2022.
