Full Name: Sudan Gurung
Nationality: Nepalese

Before becoming an activist, Sudan Gurung worked in event management. He also was a DJ and owned a nightclub called OMG.
The major turning point in his life came with the 2015 Nepal earthquake. During that disaster, he experienced a profound personal tragedy: he lost his child, and in fact, there’s a reported moment when a child died in his arms.
In response to the earthquake, he used social media to mobilize nearly 200 volunteers to assist with relief efforts. This experience set the stage for his later humanitarian and civic work.

After the 2015 earthquake, Gurung founded Hami Nepal, a youth-led NGO. Initially focused on disaster relief and post-earthquake rehabilitation, over time the organization expanded its scope to include emergency response to disasters (earthquakes, floods, landslides), public health crises, and civic activism.
Under his leadership, Hami Nepal has been involved in:
- Mobilizing volunteers for relief during disasters.
- Campaigns for transparency and accountability, such as the Ghopa Camp protest in Dharan, which demanded better medical services and transparency at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences.

In September 2025, Gurung came to prominence as one of the leaders of the Gen Z protests in Nepal. These protests were sparked by the government’s ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, X.
He leveraged social media, Instagram, Discord and other online tools to organize protest routes, provide safety guidelines, and mobilize students and youth. The students were encouraged to wear school uniforms and carry books in their hands as symbols of peaceful protest.
Under pressure from the protests, the government reversed the social media ban, and the Prime Minister at the time (KP Sharma Oli) resigned. Sudan Gurung and Hami Nepal were central figures in causing this political change.

Gurung is not formally affiliated with any political party; his activism is seen as non-partisan.
He uses peaceful protest, symbolism, and mobilization of youth to press for accountability, transparency, free speech, and rights in the digital sphere.
Hami Nepal under his leadership emphasizes that it is “for the people, by the people.”

Sudan Gurung is now considered one of the most prominent voices of Nepal’s younger generation, especially Gen Z, pushing for reforms.
He has expressed interest in participating in the political process more directly, including his intention to possibly contest in elections.
